Last night I hit Longfellow Books for a reading by Ed Lin, author of This Is A Bust (Ed just signed a deal with St. Martin's for the sequel to Bust). I was excited because I realy liked this book, emailed him and he kindly mailed back as have most authors I've tried to contact. I expected a fun reading and maybe a chance to gush about the book.
What I wasn't prepared for? Well, this for starters:

Yeah, he's reading a book. So what?
So what?
He's wearing a frigging Sonics t-shirt, yo!!!
I love The Sonics! Ed Lin loves The Sonics! It was meat to be! It took me a bit to egister it but when I did I was doubly psyched.
So he read from This Is A Bust and did different voices for the characters, which was cool. During the Q&A, Chris Bowe, owner of Longfellow, asked him who he was reading. First author he mentions? Charles Willeford! Holy Christ! I love Willeford!!! I guess perhaps I am so gushy about it is that I find I have little in common with some of my favorite writers, but then I think that's BS because I've jawed with a few of them and found common interests. But Willeford and The Sonics? Sheeeeeeeeiitttt!!!
After the reading and Q&A, Ed Prez signed my books and I gushed more about The Sonics, Willeford movies and then some more about the layout and the way he opened up a door on Chinatown that I never knew about. He was very cool and approachable, which again was a pleasant surprise.
Also there was Jaed Coffin, a young writer who's got some new stuff coming out soon. Gave him a card and we made plans to hang and chill. Better hurry up as his lady is muy pregnanto. Bowe talked about getting a night together with young authors reading like Ed, Jaed, Ron Currie, Jr. and... well, then he points to me and says, "Charles, you gotta get your book done!" I was quite flattered, to say the least. I said, "It is done, but it's sitting on an agent's desk in Queens in the slush pile!" I was just pleased that he liked my stuff enough to lump me in with these heavyweights!
I was just so psyched to be hanging out with people who love writing like I do and were also pro's but people, too.
This makes my going to Readercon today all the more awesome!
